Harvest Season is in Full Swing

Over the next few months many fresh produce items will be ripe for the picking. If you have a backyard garden you will notice the fruits of your labor producing delicious edible gifts. It’s not too late to learn about food storage options and plan to employ this new found knowledge.

Honestly I feel like food storage and winter prep is an art form that takes gaining a wealth of knowledge and practicing until satisfactory results are reached. I wish I had access to the women elders from my family tree that perfected this art form so that I could get all my questions answered and skip some of the trial and error that accompanies learning a new craft. Alas that is not an option. However we are fortunate to have internet access that allows us a wealth of knowledge right at our fingertips so I am taking advantage of that tool.

I follow a homesteading family to begin my canning journey and this was a great start because the woman details just enough to inform without overwhelming so if you want her info just comment below as I am not necessarily promoting her material. Anyway, as I mentioned in my learning to can pickles post I have taken baby steps. I have progressed to canning fresh picked tomatoes (already tested and work great for making fresh green chile. 😃

I have also canned fresh tart cherries and palisade peaches (also tested – made a delicious gf cobbler). Now is the time to start calculating how many of these cost effective treats we will need to sustain our household for the winter so that we can enjoy the fresh taste of local produce harvested at the peak of the season. I anticipate this will save us a sizable chunk of money on our winter grocery bills. Not to mention the ease of opening a canned item that is easier to prepare for a meal than cutting, peeling, and chopping the fresh items would be.

So I just want to plant the seeds of knowledge that maybe our grandparents were on the right track when they harvested the backyard garden and stored the produce that sustained the family through the cold winter months when food is less accessible, nutrient rich, and definitely costs more. I would be glad to discuss this with you via email, as a guest on the show, or in the comments below so don’t hesitate to reach out. People need people and people need knowledge to evoke and grow.

Benefits of colds and the flu

I struggled with the title for this blog post because I want you to be curious enough to read my thoughts but not dismiss me too quickly. So thanks for reading this far and I hope you will comment if you find value in this post.

I have never met anyone who willingly admitted to enjoying being sick. However it’s important to know the pros and cons of our daily activities as we work to learn and lead a healthy lifestyle. I think everyone has been more hyper aware of all germs and bacteria since the recent plandemic. I have see the displays of disposable face masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes.

No don’t get me wrong. I do not want anyone to get sick and I don’t think we should actively seek to find illness. However we should understand that our immune systems work much like muscles and muscles need to be challenged from time to time. When we are exposed to germs in our every day travels we become it helps our immune system build and strengthen which helps us fight off the majority of viruses that we come into contact with.

When we do get sick it is a sort of reboot for our body to flex the immune system and utilize the tools such as creating mucus and raising body temperature to burn off all the invaders. It is a time for us to rest and hydrate to let our bodies heal. I know it is frustrating that we tend to get sick after a period of stress such as right after a wedding, or on day one of vacation. This is a reminder that we need to work with our bodies to provide rest and nourishment so that we don’t get sick in the first place.

I do have some helpful tools if you do find yourself getting ill and not wanting to go the pharmaceutical route to heal. Reach out for more information if you are interested.

Be well

Work Smarter Not Harder

I have heard this so many times throughout my life from many different people. You may have heard this before as well. However, there are sometimes when I have felt limited such as by money, time, or policies. So when I had the time or money then I would invest in learning about ways to make things easier for myself.

Soooo I LOVE having a clean house buuuuttt I don’t love cleaning. If you love cleaning then kudos and much respect. The rest of you may enjoy learning about how I discovered I could do less scrubbing.

I discovered the drill brush and purchased one to use on my corded drill. There are some YouTube videos that give instructions on how to make your own but I think purchasing one was a safer option for me. So far I have tested the brushes on my textured shower floor, kitchen sink, and textured refrigerator. I am so impressed by how easy it is to use and recommend trying it out.

Of course if you have questions or would like some videos or before and after photos just comment below and let me know.

Learning to Can Pickles

This is not an easy undertaking! However, the rewards are abundant and delicious. 🤤😃

Have you ever wanted to learn how to can fruits and veggies during the growing season so you can enjoy your garden fresh foods all winter? I highly recommend doing your homework and there are a lot of resources out there. I won’t list all my resources here but I will let you know that learning the safety essentials are first and foremost. This includes safe temperatures for processing and acid levels.

Hope I didn’t lose you there. Thankfully you can take baby steps and pickles are an easy place to start. I even made refrigerator pickles to start because you don’t need to process them at all. After you learn about safety then you will need the produce and the equipment to proceed.

I have made several batches of jelly and tweak things each time until I get it right where I want it. I do have a raspberry bush in my backyard so I know that the berries are high quality and they don’t need any chemicals so I feel good about sharing my jelly. You can prioritize what the most important aspects are to you.

Canning produce can be very budget friendly because the jars can be reused and save you money by not paying higher prices for out of season produce.

Canning goes way beyond pickles and jelly so I want to encourage you to do your own research and feel free to share recipes for your favorites. In fact I am starting an old school recipe box with index cards to save my favorites and making them easy to find.

Join us Mondays 5:30pm MST / 6:30pm CST as we will be talking all things good this next episode.
